From Law Enforcement to Pet Safety: Meet Alicia
People sometimes ask how a 26-year law enforcement career turns into a pet sitting business. The honest answer: it's less of a career change than it looks. The skills that make someone good at protecting a community — observation, preparation, verification, and calm under pressure — are exactly the skills that make someone good at protecting your pets.
I'm Alicia, owner of Max's Pet Patrol Pet Sitters, and this is why I built our service the way I did.
Maximus: The Name Behind the Patrol
Max's Pet Patrol is named for Maximus vom Marienhof — Max — my beloved German Shepherd who lived from November 13, 2011 to June 9, 2022. Max wasn't just a pet; he was a partner and a teacher. Caring for him through puppyhood, his working years, and his senior years taught me what professional-grade pet care actually requires: consistency, attentiveness, and treating every animal like they're your own.
Every service we offer carries his name. That's not branding — that's a promise.
What a Law Enforcement Career Teaches About Care
Observation: Notice the Small Things Early
In police work, the small detail is often the important one. The same is true with animals. A dog who suddenly won't climb the stairs, a cat drinking more water than usual, a bird sitting fluffed on the bottom of the cage — these are early signals that something's wrong. Twenty-six years of reading people and situations trained me to read animals the same way, and I train our sitters to do the same. When we notice something, you hear about it the same day, not at the end of the booking.
Preparation: Plan for the Emergency Before It Happens
Officers don't hope emergencies don't happen; they train for them. Our version: every Max's Pet Patrol team member is certified in pet first aid and CPR by the American Red Cross. We know where the nearest emergency vet is for every town we serve — Buford, Auburn, Flowery Branch, Hoschton, and Braselton — and we collect your vet's contact information and your pet's medical details before the first visit, not during one.
Verification: Trust Is Earned, Then Documented
Law enforcement runs on verification — you confirm, you document, you follow procedure. We bring the same discipline to your home:
- Every sitter is background-checked before their first visit
- We carry liability insurance and a bond, and we'll show you proof any time you ask
- We're a member of the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS), with its code of ethics and ongoing training requirements
- Visit reports and photos go to you after every visit, so you always know your pets are okay
Composure: Calm Is Contagious — for Pets and People
Animals read our emotions faster than we do. A sitter who panics makes a scared dog worse; a sitter who stays steady can de-escalate nearly anything. Years of staying calm in genuinely high-stakes situations taught me that composure is a skill, not a personality trait — and it's the number one thing I look for when someone joins the Patrol.
Why We Serve Braselton, Hoschton, Auburn, Flowery Branch, and Buford
After decades serving the public, I wanted to build something rooted in my own community. These five towns are home — we know the neighborhoods, the quiet streets, the busy roads to avoid on walks, and the vets and emergency clinics nearby. Being local isn't a marketing line; it's operational knowledge that keeps your pets safer.
Our home base and service details: Braselton, Hoschton, Auburn, Flowery Branch, and Buford.
How We Work — and Don't Work
A few policies that come directly from how I was trained to work:
- Maximum two dogs per walk. Attention is a finite resource; your dog gets all of ours. No pack walks, no exceptions.
- In-home visits only — no overnight stays or boarding. Your pet stays where they're most comfortable: their home, their routine, their smells.
- Medication administration with clear written instructions. We follow your vet's directions exactly and document every dose.
- Clear communication before, during, and after every booking. You should never wonder how your pet is doing.
The Standard I'd Want for My Own Pets
That's really the whole philosophy. Max got the best care I could give him — bonded, insured, certified, attentive professionals who treated him like family. Max's Pet Patrol exists to give your pets exactly that standard, in every town we serve.
If that's the care you're looking for, let's schedule a meet-and-greet. I'd love to meet you — and I'd really love to meet your pets.
